News from Finland, the Home of Finola! "Urpiainens" (Carduelis flammea) feasting on Finola seed in Kuopio, Finland, just before (left) and after (right) a heavy snow storm this spring. These and other song birds are arriving early this year, due to warmer weather. There were about 100 hungry birds on this table just after the snow, on March 26, 2008, most of which were too shy to be photographed. This year, and for the first time, we noticed the rare and extremely shy Carduelis cannabina at this table. In Finnish, this bird is known as "Hemppo". That's right! The "Common Linnet", which is now not so common any more, was quickly scarfing down these Finola hemp seeds, as if it had not had any for too many generations. Early this spring we also saw several "kelta hemppo", literally "yellow" hemppo (Serinus serinus), a more common finch known as the European Serin. Both a very charming bird species. Welcome back to Finland, Hemppos! Y'all know where to find the good stuff!
Finola® oil is only available from Finland. The Finnish text here reads: "Cold-pressed Hempseed oil". Elixi Oil, Ltd. is the distributor of Finola® oil.

Linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid are the two essential fatty acids (EFAs), which make up 75% of Finola® oil. As the name implies; these two fatty acids are essential to human health, and must be obtained through the daily diet. Several medical studies have shown that consumption of these two highly unsaturated fatty acids can have beneficial effects on many chronic and degenerative health conditions. In addition, Finola® oil also contains over 4% GLA (omega-6) and about 2% SDA (omega-3), which are both rare and biochemically valuable fatty acids. Both GLA and SDA are natural biological metabolites of the two EFAs. Together, the total amount of omega-3 and omega-6 combined is over 80% of the fatty acids in Finola® oil. The total content of unsaturated fatty acids in Finola® oil is over 90%. Caution! Highly unsaturated
vegetable oils are denatured by heating above 150 C,
which can result in the production of unhealthy
trans-fatty acids and peroxides. These chemical reactions are dependent on both time and temperature. In other words, the longer one cooks with Finola® oil and the higher the temperature, the more peroxides and trans-fatty acids are formed. This is why we advise to not cook with Finola® oil at high temperatures for long periods of time.
